Hey guys,
I'm thinking of entering the Texaco Art Competition, which is the biggest art comp in Ireland for people under 18 years old. I want to draw some kind of bird, but I haven't any plans that are more specific than that. I'd love to draw colourful birds, like kingfishers or birds of paradise (not the flower) in coloured pencil, but I've no idea where to start. Anyone have any ideas or tips for me? Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!
Aoife.

Suggestion ...
... exotic birds may be great to draw but how about choosing a bird rare in Ireland or a migrant visiting bird - there are some quite exotic ones reported.
Google "Irish Bird Images" and you will find a diary of rare sitings (not all in Ireland but most are). The images on here are likely to be higher quality and if you were to contact any of the photographers and explain what you want source material for they may agree to you using it without charge.

Drawing birds...
First thing find a very good reference photo that is large enough to see fine details. You can use the reference photo for a couple of things, color reference and also to get the birds proportions and specific features. The more details you have as reference the better your bird drawing will be. What type of colored pencils do you use? I find Prisma Colored pencils are absolutely the best as far as intense color and laydown on the paper. You don't get the scratchiness like you would get from a cheap colored pencil. Also use some paper with a "tooth" textured art paper is the best because it grabs the color from the pencils better and in the long run you end up with a better picture. If there are any other questions that you have just post them. If I can help I will. I love to do colored pencil drawings. Good luck with yours!
