Chapter 1: The Meeting
Ember Talonholme focused intently on the dark shadows of the forest. Her light spell faintly illuminated the forest floor, casting a soft yellow glow by her feet. Her dress swished gently with every step she took, and her jacket danced around her wrists with every move.
A deep cowl covered Ash Fox’s slender face, only to be hidden much more by the shadow that held her as she wait, bow at the ready. She saw the light come slowly into the dark forest, which was Ash’s domain. Her breaths came and went with the wind, “Outsiders…”she muttered.
Ember’s hair fell lightly around her face, a rich brown which faded to gold at the tips. The arrow on her forehead represented her years of training. Her guard was up, and she had a feeling something was watching her. She paused for a moment to look around her, but nothing was there in the shadows... as far as she could see, anyways, which wasn't much.
A silent chuckle came to Ash’s lips, “A mage, from the Grand Collage, here in the Shadow Woods?" She licked the tip of her arrow as she drew it to her cheek, breathing as taught. The arrow whipped through her finger tips hitting the tree in front of the mage, only brushing her hair.
Ember jumped as the arrow hit the tree near her, just inches from her face. A Ranger's arrow, she thought, as she studied the feathered ends and the marked shaft. Two can play at that game. Gathering up her mana she sent a lightning bolt of energy towards the source, grinning at the feel of the pure adrenaline of using magik.
Ash's eyes opened widely in surprise at first, but then managed to get into the hole within the tree, smiling slyly. “Clever aren't you mage,” she muttered.
Ember knew she had missed as soon as she heard the rustle of movement in the undergrowth. Her smile fading into a scowl, she moved into the shadows and canceled the light spell, casting her into the darkness of the Shadow Woods. “Rangers…” she muttered.
Ash looked down at the mage, smiling, then she slowly stepped out of the tree, and her dark brown hair fell in her face. She had her hands up, bow strapped to her back.
“Well look here, wee lass lost now aye?”
Ember’s gaze snapped up to where the voice had come from, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Ranger. “What do you mean, lost? I’m here on a mission." She glared at the source of the voice, keeping her goal a secret.
“Why, why would one such as yourself be out here?” Ash said.
"I could say the same for you, Ranger," she said, her voice full of contempt.
“Me? Why I live here my friend and you’re in my home.” Ash said, scoffing.
"Ppfft, live here? Why would anyone want to live in a dark, dreary, lifeless place like this? Where do you sleep, in the trees?" Ember chuckled.
“Why you puff up ignorant-, ugh... Forget it…”
Ember rolled her eyes. “Whatever dude, if you like to sleep in damp trees, go for it. I, on the other hand, have business to attend to..." she trailed off as she started walking away.
“Don't let me stop you then.”
"Oh, trust me; I won't let anything get in my way... Unless they want to die.”
“Oh really now, Princess,” Ash scoffed, rolling her eyes, “What are you going to do? Throw your wand at me?”
"Oh, I'll do more than that, tree hugger."
“Oh no, you did not just call me that! Ugh in all my years…!”
"Yes, yes I did just call you that, what are you going to do about it, throw sticks at me?" Ember said sarcastically, smirking.
“Oh? Well, you’re talking to a first class assassin as well as a master markswoman and stealth thief.” She said boastingly. She pulled out a small mug and took a swig from it.
"Oooo, I'm so scared." Ember said sarcastically. Hoping to catch Ash off guard, she spewed a jet of ice towards her, the adrenaline once again pumping through her, an effect of using magik.
Ash wiped her mouth with her sleeve. “I shouldn't have drunk this after that contract…” she muttered to herself, dodging the ice stream.
Ember followed Ash’s movements, being careful to keep her aim on target. “Years of training aren’t going to quit on me now…” she muttered.
“Well, mine have.... momentarily,” Ash replied, throwing the mug.
Ember cut off the ice stream for a complex mix of fiery electricity, the bolts lighting the forest in a red glow. Now’s the chance to escape, she thought. She cast her invisibility spell while cutting off the attack, and then snuck through the forest to the undergrowth just across from where the Ranger was perched in a tree. She watched the Ranger.
“You know the great dynasty of the *hic* Grey Fox mage? Hey, where’d that mage go?”
Ember recalled that tale, but only one person knew of him or his location, which was exactly her mission. Rumors had it the only source of information lived in the Shadow Woods...
“Well you’re talking to that living descendent here!”
No, not this tree hugger. She had to be lying. The Grey Fox mage would never go to the side of the Rangers... would he? She paused there, brooding over the fact, keeping a constant check on her invisibility spell.
“Well, just so you know there was more than one, mage.” Ash said, sensing Ember was still close by, even though she couldn’t see her. She looked at her ruined tunic. “I’m just on the dwindling little branch that’s about to break and it just...” she paused.
"Just what? Ember said, materializing right in front of her, hovering at least five feet off the ground.
“I did always wonder why magik never seemed to hurt me... hmm? Oh, you’re still here Princess. Umm, I'll save that for another time.” She said, looking at the floating figure of Ember.
Furious, Ember lifted her up with a spell and pinned her to the trunk forcefully. She repeated herself. "Just what?!" She shouted, the threat clear in her voice.
“It just won’t go away; the damn thing is a curse!! Ok? Happy? Now put me down!” She shouted, glaring as tears streaked down her face.
Glaring, Ember released the spell by unclenching her fist, watching as Ash fell the five or so feet to the ground. "You said let go," Ember shrugged.
She hovered down to stand in front of her, then turned and walked away.
Ember paused and turned around, and her gaze softened a bit as she heard sobs echo quietly over to where Ember was standing. She sighed, frustrated at wanting to sympathize and her deep hatred for Rangers.
The emotions clashed within her, and Ember stood there, unsure. Suddenly a light hovered over the bent figure of Ash on the ground.
“What the..." Ember trailed off as she saw the orb of light, wandering who had cast it.
Ash looked up at the glowing orb.
“Ugh… I hate it when I do that.”
"You cast the orb?" Ember asked, bewildered.
“Hmm? Oh, sometimes, on emotional events. I don't know why though.” She poked the orb, and it turned green.
"Ah, crap..." Ember could feel the drain of mana taking its toll. She had used too much mana over the past week, and she knew what would come. She could see the black coming over her vision. "No, not no-" Ember was cut off as she collapsed, and she struggled to crawl somewhere, anywhere but where she was now... It was useless, because she felt the strength draining from her, and the last thing Ember saw was the now green glow of the orb.

It is NOT something off of Adventure time, the art is just in that style.

About the Trilogy
The 'Heroes of Syrian'trae ' trilogy are composed of Ashes to Flames, Fallen Snow, and Evergreen. They are written by friendsofold and I, and we hope to finish it in about a year or two. We are both 14, and I think its turning out really good so far. We write in in roleplay form, then copy it to a document to be proofread and organized. What you see here is wht it looks like after I have proofread it. Trust me: you dont want to see the unproofread parts XD

An Afterthought
After Friendsofold published her drawing, Adventure Friends (which is a drawing of me, her, and our other friend as Adventure Time characters) we both decided we should do a roleplay on it. Its been less than 3 days, and we already have 46 pages of content. We have agreed that we are going to try to make it into a novel, and maybe, when we're in college, make it our own cartoon. This is just the first 'scene'.
Enjoy♥
