Part one: Flickerflash's beggining
"RUN!!!!!" Braveheart yelled as the flames came closer to the nursery.
"Please....."Braveheart begged her. She hissed and extended her claws, ready to attack him if it ment she would gain intry to the nursery. He took a step backward then turned tail on her and raced across the clearing, jumped the dry streambed, and began to urge the elders out of their den.
The Mountain Clan camp had sprung into action when the dry summer day had begun to experiance heat lightning. As far as FlickerFlash knew the lightning had struck a quarter mile away from their camp and caught of the High Pine and had spread, quickly devoring the dry tinder that had become the whole mountain land. The sun still shone down upon the forested mountain as it burned as though the day was absolutly normal.
Now that Braveheart was alone she had time to be scared. No, she had time to be TERRIFIED. But the she heard her kit, Meadowkit, scream "HELP! HELP! Flickerflash! Braveheart! Help we're stuck."
At the sound of her young she clenched her jaw and raced through the barrier of fire that were between her and the nursery interance. Smoke filled her lungs and threatened to overwhelm her before she stumbled into the small spce that she lived in with her kits and Blueflower and her two kits.
As she struggled to breath two bundles of soft kitten fur pressed against her on both sides.
"Oh, you came." breathed Cricketkit. Flickerflash didn't reply.
As the words left her kit's mouth a wave of heat and smoke came through the tunnel that lead to the clearing. It was folowed by Dustyflame. The black and white tom was gasping for air. He staggered froward and collapsed.
"Came to help." He managed to whisper, but his voice was horse and ragged.
more flames were licking at the interance now. Flickerflash knew that they had to escape that way. They had one chance and they had to act fast.
Taking a deep breath she spoke, trying to keep her voice from cracking. "We have to run through it." Before her family could protest she sighed and whispered "There's no other way. I won't allow you all to die."
"Mother?" Cricketkit asked uncertainly. She gazed down into his little green eyes. he stared back, trust and love for her pooled in emerald lakes, and she knew that the same expression was on her face, as they were so alike. "I'll do it. I'll do it for you." he took his eyes away and focused instead on the bright flashing flames that threatened to distroy them all.
Flickerflash nodded. she leaned down and licked the top of his head, then licked the top of Meadowkit's.
"Thank you, son. Now Cricketkit...."she paused at the agony of placing this weight on his little shoulders."If I don't get out of here I need you to take care of your sister, okay? Can you do that for me?"
Cricketkit gulped but nodded.
She turned and picked Cricketkit up in her jaws. "Dustyflame. Get Meadowkit. I can't do this alone."
Her brother rose unsteadily to his paws and grasped Meadowkit's scruff. "Ready" he mumbled through the bunches of russet fur he held.
Flickerflash braced her shoulders then, with Dustyflame and Meadowkit close behind, she sprinted forward into the fire.
The final thing she heard through the smoke was, "Flickerflash, help. You are our mother. It was your job to protect us." before a crushing black wave slammed down before her vision and everything went black.
