Inspiration vs Plagerism

As an artist I rely heavily on existing imagery for reference. I can't whip something up out of thin air and put it on paper. I've noticed that many artists on Queeky are inspired, like myself, by images from movies and advertisements, and enjoy the challenge of reproducing it to the best of their abilities. But I've become so aware of the issue of plagerism, especially if we would like to profit financially from our work. As I understand copyright law, if your piece is remotely reminiscent of another artist's photo or painting, you could be sued for infringement. So the question is, how do you get inspiration without using images another person has recorded? I know I could take my sketchbook or camera out on the street myself, but somehow I'm never as inspired by those results. Anyway, I'm hoping others will share ideas that they have used to get around the whole plagerism issue. Where do YOU get your inspiration from?????

plagiarism ... You see, it
plagiarism ...

You see, it is natural that many plagiarism, I used reference for some of my drawings, it is more practice, but the truth, I can not draw, and without reference, if I'm not inspired.
go!
all have inspiration! personally I admit it is hard pass of your head, to a leaf, What you have in mind.
let's see ... a feeling, an image comes to my mind.
I would say that inspiration is a mood. -_-
have a good day and find your inspiration.

Plagiarism

@Crisco: yes, I think art is a mirror of time, and so we are inspired by our enviroment. And it is difficult to get rid of advertisements and similar these days ...
...
I get my inspiration from
making mindless doodles. Now and then I get inspiration from music
I like spreading random joy! That's why my comments are often so weird.
Does that bother you? Oh... want a hug?
Interesting....
take Mr Freeze for instance ..... Drawing a doily with silk flowers is a bore - a real challenge that I (operative word, here) enjoyed, was doing Mr. Freeze - of course I did not make him up - he is Mr. Freeze. His ref is from a standard movie promotional and I'm sure everybody on Queeky knows where it comes from. Queeky is not a real gallery. There are no price tags on the work. Practice practice practice makes a great artist. All those musicians playing Bach and Mozart on stage in public are plagiarizing, but it's an acceptable practice. Google images is a library of photos - there are also many copywrite free photo sites if one feels queazy about using internet photos - just do not try to sell it as your own - but copying to learn is cool.
That was just a great
That was just a great suggestion ...
And the last one --- multiple ref. --- LLLOOOLLLL!!!!
For me if I am to draw without ref, I draw landscape and abstract mostly ... sometimes potrait ... Previously I used to draw a lot of still-life and I used to ask every member of my family or friends to sit for me as models, but then that is long time back
.....
I suppose now I am most often too tired
to do something as persuasive as that, I lack the energy and time ... well while writing this I wish I will again go back to those days while being in QUEEKY!!!
And to talk about plagerism and copyright I really do not like these ideas ... they are just egoistic or money-making concepts that are really immaterial to lovers of art and beauty ... how much one tries to imitate or duplicate a thing there can never be two exact copies ... each one have their own flavour and style ... the little nudges of improvisation here and there ... in short they are in their own way ... every artist everywhere produces unique work ... no wonder in QUEEKY too ... i sometimes really wonder the way people variate drawings and how each one unravel a beauty in the "same" art!! that you dont call plagerism ... it is art for its sheer cause ...
well crisco ... that was really a good topic you have chosen, I look forward to see more comment from others ...
HAPPPY POSTING!!

Every artist was first an amateur.
I whole-heartedly agree!
I also feel that it's a shame that we have to be so concerned with similarities between our work and another artist's! It's stifling and prohibitive! Some artists actually consider it a compliment to "pay homage" to their work...I know I would. I HAVE done what Dervish recommended referring to making random marks and turning them into something recognizable. I admit that it IS fun and liberating. Everyone should try it.
Thanks for the responses!!

to get inspiration ...
Well, I recommend to try following:
- concentrate and imagine you are a camera (or sitting in the camera
)

- try not to draw from a image reference, but a "real view" reference (e.g. a glass on the table or a bunch of flowers).
- try to break down your 3D view to your 2D paper. use a grid as a helper.
- draw wild random lines. look at those lines for a time and imagine how these lines can be transformed to forms, faces or whatever
Another idea would be to combine many references into one drawing ...
cheers
