I don't know for certain, but I think the Easter Bunny stories were invented to counter the darkness of the Middle Ages, as that's when they surfaced. So many people were dying of the Plague then,...so they just added the bunny story to the Christ cycle of stories for the kids who had lost so many of their loved ones and maybe couldn't hold any more stories of death...it helped them to transcend and laugh again
